History

FERBASA is engaged in chromite extraction from two mining areas, located in the Central-North region of Bahia state, at a distance of 90 kilometers from each other: the chromite producing district of Vale do Jacurici and the chromite producing district of Campo Formoso.

Its main mines are Coitezeiro, in Campo Formoso (BA) and Ipueira, located in the municipality of Andorinha (BA).

At Campo Formoso, operations began in 1961, with the open pit mining method, which continues to be used. The operations in Andorinha (BA) began in 1973 for chrome ore production, with open pit mining, and, later, through underground methods. Most of the ore production is used to meet the needs of the Metallurgy operation, in Pojuca (BA), for the production of ferrochrome and ferrochrome silicon.
